Rhinoplasty Q&A

How is rhinoplasty performed?

Rhinoplasty is a procedure to reshape your nose and is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries today. The two methods of rhinoplasty are:

Closed rhinoplasty

A closed (endonasal) rhinoplasty involves two incisions inside the nostrils. Your surgeon works from within your nose and makes no external incisions.

Open rhinoplasty

In an open rhinoplasty, there are two incisions inside the nose and one horizontal incision outside the nose, under the nostrils. This third incision allows your surgeon to lift the skin of the nose to perform the procedure.

What type of rhinoplasty is right for me?

Dr. Cristel uses personalized rhinoplasty approaches based on your individual nasal anatomy and your wishes for your appearance. Open and closed rhinoplasty both have unique benefits.

For example, closed rhinoplasty doesn’t leave any visible scars. However, your surgeon has less access to your nose with closed rhinoplasty, so they generally can’t make the same extensive changes as they could with an open rhinoplasty.

Fortunately, the scar in an open rhinoplasty isn’t very visible, as it’s well concealed under the nose.

Although you might want only a small cosmetic change — for example, the removal of a small bump — the amount of appearance change doesn’t necessarily correspond to the complexity of the procedure. So, some patients that might think they’re candidates for a closed rhinoplasty could actually need a lot of detailed work, so they’re better candidates for an open rhinoplasty.

Dr. Cristel will perform a detailed exam and analysis with your during your visit. He will also demonstrate the expected changes with photo imaging to come to a joint agreement with the plan for surgery.

What procedures can enhance my rhinoplasty results?

Your nose is a central feature of your face, so rhinoplasty can strikingly improve your appearance and help you love how you look. But, to look your very best, you might want to address concerns in the top and bottom thirds of your face at the same time.

Synergi Facial Surgery and Synergi Medspa offer procedures that can go along with rhinoplasty to help revitalize your whole face, such as:

  • Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
  • Facelift
  • Neck lift
  • Buccal fat reduction
  • Facial fat grafting
  • Chin implant
  • Submental (under chin) liposuction
  • Hair restoration

Along with cosmetic rhinoplasty, Dr. Cristel specializes in facial trauma reconstruction, skin cancer reconstruction, facial implants, and other procedures that can reestablish normal nose anatomy. He performs full spectrum head and neck surgery in children and adults.
